OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 and a feature it calls Intelligent UI across every ChatGPT tier on Oct. 7, 2026, replacing the familiar wall of prose with tappable buttons, interactive calculators, editable charts, and side-by-side comparison cards composed on the fly. The company says the update is “built for more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.”
The Wednesday rollout covered Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Free and Go followed Thursday. Two sub-models carry the load: GPT-6 Sol on paid tiers, GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go. For now, only the Chat tab is affected; Work and Codex are unchanged. OpenAI first introduced GPT-6 to paid customers in September.
Aarush Selvan, an OpenAI product manager, framed the shift as overdue. “ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface,” he said, arguing that when people use the product to “get things done — from everyday things like planning a recipe or a trip or even trying to learn something — the most helpful answers aren’t just text.” Demos shown to reporters included an interactive diagram of how an airplane wing generates lift, a bicycle-mechanics explainer, a multi-day hiking map, and a personal savings calculator.
The architecture is less glamorous than the demos. Unite.AI reports that OpenAI assembled a library of native, streamable interface components alongside a compiler that renders progressively as the model generates, with the model itself deciding when a comparison belongs in a table, when an interactive diagram beats paragraphs, and when plain prose is still the right call. RuntimeWire, which says it documented the component system roughly six weeks before the branded launch, describes it as embedded inside ChatGPT rather than shipped as a separate interface-building product.
There’s a notable catch. AI Weekly flags that activating OpenAI’s Astra extended thinking mode disables Intelligent UI, even on Pro. OpenAI hasn’t publicly addressed the trade-off, and concedes that work remains to improve the model’s design judgment and widen the set of interfaces it can produce.
For small businesses, the stakes are structural rather than cosmetic. When a buyer asks ChatGPT to compare three local vendors, the answer now arrives as a rendered decision tool. Businesses present in that render accurately gain visual credibility at the decision stage; those absent, or listed with stale prices and wrong hours, are effectively invisible on a comparison surface used weekly by more than a billion people. The pattern echoes Google’s A.I. summaries rewriting the opening line of a brand’s search presence, extends earlier reporting on ChatGPT’s move away from the text box, and compounds G2’s finding that 82 percent of B2B buyers begin research in A.I. chatbots.
The reply box is now a rendering surface. What it renders about a given business is no longer that business’s call.
