OpenAI began rolling out Intelligent UI on Wednesday, October 7, alongside two new GPT-6 models, replacing the familiar block of text with tappable widgets, calculators, maps, and side-by-side comparisons rendered inside the chat window itself. The paid-tier model, Sol, reached Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers on October 7; the Free and Go model, Luna, begins arriving today. For the small businesses that depend on being discovered rather than searched for, the discovery surface just moved.
The scale is the story. ChatGPT users are increasingly asking the chatbot the questions they used to type into Google, and as of this week they’re getting back something closer to an app than an answer. TechCrunch, briefed by the company, described responses that ship with “tappable buttons, a customized calculator for a specific task, interactive charts, editable graphs, and other elements the user can work with directly.” MacRumors noted sample comparisons on OpenAI’s own site in which GPT-6 renders an interactive recipe that adjusts quantities by guest count, integrated maps, and follow-up multiple-choice prompts. OpenAI, per MacRumors, says the system draws on “a library of native, streamable components with a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it.”
“ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface,” said Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, telling TechCrunch the new surface is meant to help users “get things done — from everyday things like planning a recipe or a trip or even trying to learn something.” OpenAI’s own framing, per 9to5Mac, is blunter: “A comparison might work best side by side.”
That sentence is the one small-business owners should read twice. A side-by-side comparison of yoga studios, accountants, or project-management tools isn’t a list of ten blue links a user can inspect. It’s a widget that includes some businesses and omits others, built on the fly from whatever ChatGPT’s web layer already knows. Quartz, citing The Verge, reports that GPT-6 both improves web search performance and begins answering while it continues to reason, which means the material that gets scraped into an interactive answer is whatever’s structured, current, and legible at query time.
The parallel is Google’s A.I. Overviews rollout, which quietly rewrote referral economics for anyone whose site copy, pricing, and FAQ pages were thin. The mechanic is the same, inside a product with meaningfully higher purchase intent. A business misrepresented inside a widget the user never leaves to verify is, functionally, a business that wasn’t there.
