Google quietly reorganized the most valuable search query a small business will ever receive. According to data DemandSphere published on Oct. 1, AI Overview presence on tracked branded keywords climbed from 26.12 percent on Sept. 1 to a peak of 90.48 percent on Sept. 27, then settled near 82 percent by month’s end. For most companies, this is the first sentence a prospective customer now reads about them, and the company didn’t write it.
The daily curve is unusually clean. Sept. 26 at 69.21 percent, Sept. 27 at 90.48, Sept. 28 at 80.23, Sept. 29 at 82.06. DemandSphere’s DemandMetrics platform samples branded keywords once a day and counts an AI Overview as present whenever one is returned, regardless of whether the brand itself gets cited inside the summary. That last detail is the one worth sitting with.
Ray Grieselhuber of DemandSphere confirmed the pattern after it was first flagged by Chris Long, co-founder of the agency Nectiv, and by Barry Schwartz of the Search Engine Roundtable. Long ran a parallel test of 100 enterprise brands using SerpApi and found AI Overviews on 93 of them, including Reddit, Salesforce, Mailchimp, and Facebook. The Search Engine Roundtable’s Oct. 1 recap described it bluntly: AI Overviews now surface for “almost every large brand name except for Google’s own name and news publications,” while also encroaching on sports-roster queries that previously fed publisher traffic.
Google has said nothing publicly. That silence is the product behavior. A branded query, the kind that converts, now opens with a machine-generated paragraph Google assembles from the company’s own site, third-party reviews, press mentions, directory listings, and structured data. Thin signal in, thin paragraph out.
The small-business consequence lands harder than the enterprise one. A 20-person company doesn’t have a PR team shaping the ambient web; it has a homepage and a Google Business Profile. This is the surface our earlier analysis of A.I. search ranking factors flagged as a leveling event, and it sits inside the measurement gap we described when Google began handing out A.I. search scorecards without reporting the lost clicks.
Long warned of likely click-through-rate depression; neither dataset measured actual clicks. DemandSphere says historical and device-level breakdowns are coming. For now, the first impression of a brand on its own name belongs to a summarizer, and the brands that fed it the most legible signals are the ones it’ll describe best.
