Amazon Ads and OpenAI began a U.S. pilot on Sept. 10 that lets select advertisers extend Amazon DSP campaigns into ChatGPT, placing sponsored text and image units beneath the chatbot’s organic responses. It’s the first time a mainstream demand-side platform has been wired directly into a general-purpose conversational A.I. product, and it converts a surface that had been an organic-citation game into a managed paid-acquisition channel.
The numbers explain the urgency on both sides. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users as of February, per CNBC, and OpenAI’s advertising business crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate last month. Amazon brings the buyers and the plumbing; OpenAI brings the attention. Delta Vacations is named among the first pilot participants.
Mechanically, the arrangement is more constrained than it looks. Access runs through Amazon DSP as a managed service limited to select U.S. brands, Marketing Dive reports, with inventory priced on cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-impressions. Amazon Ads representatives build the campaigns and supply what they call “context hints” to match ads with relevant conversations, per eMarketer, while OpenAI’s ad system controls all delivery decisions. Pilot advertisers receive aggregated impressions, clicks, CPM, CPC, and cost-per-result data. That’s enough to test. It isn’t enough to scale with confidence.
The maturity gap is the story analysts keep circling. OpenAI is “still trying to build out even many of the basics of a functional ad sales operation, including their team, technology, vendor partnerships, ad formats, and pricing,” eMarketer’s Nate Elliott said. Amazon, by contrast, is running its familiar supply-chasing playbook. Digiday notes the company’s pattern with Netflix, Roku, Spotify, and Disney: start narrow, then broaden fast.
For consumer-facing small businesses, the practical read is that the door isn’t open yet, but the frame is being set. Brands already running Amazon DSP are the initial beneficiaries; everyone else is spectating. Owners can still do the pre-work: tighten Amazon catalog data, review existing DSP creative for conversational extension, and audit how their products currently surface inside ChatGPT organically. Our earlier notes on what offer clarity means for ChatGPT ad performance, A.I.-referral revenue outperforming other acquisition channels, and ChatGPT’s separate European ad rollout map the terrain.
Every prior chatbot-monetization moment has arrived faster than the incumbents expected and slower than the maximalists promised. This one will follow the same curve, only inside Amazon’s distribution machine.
