Meta has begun notifying individual advertisers that the Placements option inside ad sets is going away, with no announced rollout date, according to a report in Social Media Today. The alerts, first surfaced publicly by Meta ads consultant Jon Loomer and described in an August 20 column by Andrew Hutchinson, arrive account by account rather than as a platform-wide bulletin. Marketing Dive republished the column on August 27 under its Sociable feature without adding new detail, which is itself a signal of how thin the public record around this change is.
The mechanical stakes are narrow but consequential. Loomer noted that the change also removes the ability to exclude entire platforms, not just individual surfaces like Facebook search results or in-stream ads between Reels. Meta’s stated rationale, in the language of the notices themselves, is to push advertisers to “expand placements” so its delivery system can select the most responsive surface for each impression. The one remaining lever, a value rule, can bid a placement down but can’t eliminate it.
For a five-to-thirty-person business running Sales or Leads campaigns on a fixed monthly budget, the loss of a hard exclusion isn’t a UI change. It’s a transfer of budget-allocation authority from the operator to the auction.
The direction isn’t new; the pace is. In an interview last year with Ben Thompson of Stratechery, cited in the Social Media Today piece, Mark Zuckerberg described an eventual state in which an advertiser supplies only a business objective and a bank account, and Meta’s systems handle creative, targeting, and measurement. The 2026 buildout has been steady toward that endpoint. In April, per Digiday, Meta opened its ad system to third-party AI tools through connectors for ChatGPT and Claude; PPC Land reported the connectors carry write access to campaigns from day one. Meta’s own Manus agent has moved deeper into the Ads Manager surface.
Read together, these aren’t parallel product updates. They’re a coordinated removal of the seams where a human operator used to intervene. Every surface an advertiser could once turn off becomes a surface Meta’s engine, or a connected model acting on the advertiser’s behalf, can bid into.
The timing is the quiet part. Q4 budgets are being set right now, on the assumption that existing exclusions will hold. Meta hasn’t said when they won’t.
