Amazon and OpenAI announced a pilot on September 10 that lets select U.S. advertisers extend Amazon Ads campaigns into ChatGPT, routing sponsored text and image placements beneath the chatbot’s answers through Amazon’s demand-side platform. It’s the first time a major retail-ad infrastructure has been wired directly into a conversational assistant with 900 million weekly active users.

The mechanics are less novel than the plumbing. Amazon Ads representatives set up and optimize the campaigns, OpenAI’s system decides when and where placements surface, and pricing runs on both CPC and CPM. Targeting draws on Amazon’s first-party data, with reps supplying what eMarketer describes as “context hints” to align ads with the drift of a conversation. Delta Vacations is among the first brands testing the format. “Conversational ads represent the fastest growing engagement opportunity for brands to reach new and existing audiences,” said Chris Conetta, director of omnichannel supply at Amazon DSP.

The strategic contradiction is worth naming. Amazon has restricted its own storefront from external assistants including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, per CNBC, even as Sensor Tower data shows Amazon was ChatGPT’s largest retail advertiser between April and August. Amazon wants inside ChatGPT’s demand funnel while keeping ChatGPT out of its supply funnel. That’s not incoherence; it’s the standard posture of an incumbent that treats a rival’s audience as a media asset and its own inventory as a moat.

The ad-load trend underneath this deal is steep. Ads per user per hour on ChatGPT’s U.S. mobile app rose 163 percent from April to August 2026, averaging 26 percent month-over-month growth, according to a separate Sensor Tower note cited by MediaPost. OpenAI’s advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, CNBC reports, against a $2.5 billion goal cited by eMarketer.

For small marketing teams, the pilot itself is out of reach. Access is currently limited to managed-service accounts, with no self-serve timeline disclosed. What matters is the direction: conversational search is being fitted with the same demand-side pipes that already run display and retail media, which will eventually make it reachable through workflows advertisers know rather than a separate OpenAI contract. Prior coverage has examined ChatGPT’s advertising economics for small operators and the channel’s European rollout.

Product discovery is quietly relocating into the answer itself. The pilot is the infrastructure catching up to a behavior shift that already happened.
