John Ternus became Apple’s eighth chief executive on Tuesday, closing Tim Cook’s 15-year run and inheriting a company whose next act depends on software Apple didn’t build. The board approved the appointment on Friday, ratifying the succession Apple telegraphed in its April 20 press release. Cook, 65, moves to Executive Chairman; Arthur Levinson, non-executive chairman for 15 years, becomes Lead Independent Director.

Ternus is 50, a University of Pennsylvania graduate who joined Apple in 2001 after four years at Virtual Research Systems. He became VP of hardware engineering in 2013 and joined the executive team as SVP in 2021. His 25-year career sits entirely on the product side: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro. “John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor,” Cook said. Ternus called Cook his mentor and said he had “been lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs,” who unveiled the first iPhone in 2007.

The financial inheritance is enormous. Apple’s market cap moved from roughly $350 billion at the start of Cook’s tenure to about $4.6 trillion at the end. Revenue climbed from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, with Services alone surpassing $100 billion and the installed base crossing 2.5 billion active devices. Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities told CNBC’s “Fast Money” that Cook “was going to stay on maybe for another year,” a timing note that suggests the board pulled the transition forward.

The strategic inheritance is harder. In December Apple replaced its A.I. chief with a Google veteran, and the rebuilt Siri will run on a licensed version of Google Gemini. A hardware CEO now owns a conversational-A.I. bet dependent on a rival’s model, arriving years after ChatGPT reset consumer expectations for how people ask questions.

That matters beyond Cupertino. Siri sits on 2.5 billion devices, and if its answers become the default surface for local recommendations and product queries, a third A.I. discovery layer joins Google Search and ChatGPT, whose retrieval engine quietly rewired itself in August in ways brands are still measuring. Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji keeps the silicon. Ternus keeps the harder question: whether Apple can ship an assistant people actually talk to.
