On Aug. 8, the share of ChatGPT’s background fanout queries using the site: operator jumped from about 0.37 percent to 16.8 percent in a single day, a roughly 46-fold increase measured by the generative-engine analytics firm Promptwatch. The average number of background searches ChatGPT ran per response also nearly doubled, from about 1.08 to 1.83. The composition of the answers changed with it.

“is no longer just searching the open web and seeing what comes back; it is deliberately going to specific sites to pull information from them,” said Klaas Foppen, co-founder of Promptwatch.

The redistribution is severe. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.83 percent between July 18 and Aug. 7 to 0.52 percent between Aug. 14 and 17, an 86.4 percent relative decline. Qwairy, tracking a fixed cohort of monitored brands, put Reddit’s drop closer to 95 percent, with press and media losing 82 percent of citation share, forums and user-generated content 70 percent, and business directories 93 percent. Institutional, government and .org sources gained 73 percent. Brand and commercial websites held roughly steady at about 67 percent of citations.

The timing is suggestive but unconfirmed. OpenAI announced on Aug. 6 that GPT-5.6 Luna would become the default model for Free and Go users; the retrieval shift landed two days later. OpenAI hasn’t explained the change and didn’t respond to a request for comment relayed through Gizmodo, per Forbes. Search Engine Journal notes the mechanism isn’t fully confirmed, and Promptwatch hasn’t ruled out a data-collection artifact, particularly given a second, sharper break on Aug. 14 that the site: change alone doesn’t explain. Google AI Overviews, for what it’s worth, saw only a mild dip in Reddit citations, from about 2.37 percent in early July to 2.10 percent in mid-August.

For a five- to thirty-person business, the practical consequence is blunt. The playbook of the last three years, listicle placements, comparison-page seeding, roundup PR, and forum threads engineered to rank, has structurally lost citation share overnight. Plain, indexed, first-party pages that answer one commercial question directly have gained it.

This is the volatility that shadows the shift in which small businesses are increasingly replacing paid-media budget with algorithmic distribution. A single unannounced backend change can revalue an entire content strategy in forty-eight hours. The winners this month are the businesses whose own domains were already legible to a machine that decided, without telling anyone, to stop browsing and start visiting.
