Google has quietly published a Help Center page confirming that AI-written summaries of a business’s online reviews will appear inside its paid Search ads across four English-language markets, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and India, with advertisers unable to rewrite the text. The page, titled “About Review summaries,” was surfaced by Hana Kobzová and first reported by PPC News Feed on October 24. It carries no publication date of its own.
The mechanics, as Google describes them, are tidy. The system “automatically aggregates online reviews from across the web,” produces “short AI-generated commentary,” and renders only what Google calls “positive only” output. “Advertisers cannot directly edit or customize the generated text.” Serving is conditional: “Review summaries only show when predicted to benefit your ad performance.” Pharmaceuticals is the single vertical Google names as excluded.
What the Help Center page doesn’t say is louder. As PPC Land notes, Google doesn’t identify which review sites feed the model, how many reviews are needed, how recent they must be, or whether a business whose aggregate rating is mostly negative can still receive a cherry-picked favorable blurb. There’s no reporting column, no account-level toggle, no in-ad disclosure obligation.
The small-business consequence is structural. An advertiser pays for the click while Google writes the copy, using inputs the advertiser also doesn’t control. Review hygiene across the open web becomes a live conversion lever inside paid Search, without the owner touching anything.
That lever is powerful, and brittle. A University of California, San Diego study presented at the IJCNLP-AACL conference in December 2025 found that participants shown AI summaries of electronics reviews reported 84 percent purchase intent, against 52 percent for readers of the originals. The same study found that models altered the sentiment of real reviews in 26.5 percent of cases.
The feature follows nearly a year of visible testing: the “What Customers Love” blocks reported by Search Engine Watch and labeled “AI-generated from the store ratings and reviews,” and a scrolling-marquee ratings test flagged in Search Engine Roundtable’s October 23 recap. It also lands into an ad environment where Google’s A.I. answers now dominating commercial searches is pushing surviving paid units to carry more weight on fewer clicks. Review text wasn’t ad copy a week ago. It’s now.
