Etsy on Oct. 22 rewrote the terms on which nearly six million sellers may list goods, banning AI-generated patterns and recipes, requiring at least one unedited photograph in every listing, and prohibiting bot-run shops. The company’s framing, articulated in an Etsy News post titled “Creativity and Trust in the Age of AI” by vice president of customer operations James Ossman, treats buyer confusion as a commercial problem rather than an ethical one. Etsy’s own note to sellers calls the inability to “can’t tell which items involve AI-generated content” a “a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy.”
That phrasing matters. Etsy posted $10.9 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2024, against roughly $75 billion at eBay and more than $700 billion at Amazon. It can’t compete on selection or price. The handmade premise is the only moat, and generative tooling has been quietly dissolving it.
The updated Listing Image Requirements, per Value Added Resource, cover knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, recipes, woodworking and construction plans, and instruction manuals. Supplemental photos may still be AI-edited for lighting, cropping, or background if they accurately represent what the buyer receives. AI-generated art remains permitted when sellers disclose use and “play a clear role” in creation. AI prompt bundles, barred separately in 2024, stay barred.
“AI should support our sellers’ creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them,” Ossman wrote, adding: “When shopping on Etsy you should always be able to understand the role sellers play in every item.”
Enforcement is deliberately vague. Etsy will flag AI-generated images during listing and expand removals over coming months, with appeals routed through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager. A new buyer-facing reporting button will, per Digital Commerce 360, initially gather information rather than trigger takedowns. PPC Land notes Etsy hasn’t specified detection technologies or whether it’ll read C2PA content credentials, nor set an effective date or transition period. Value Added Resource adds that non-compliant sellers face refund liability when buyers open cases over products that are materially different from those advertised, with repeat violations risking shop removal.
The policy traces to a November 2025 Ask Me Anything with chief executive Kruti Patel Goyal, where sellers protested unreproducible AI crochet patterns. Roughly 90 percent of Etsy sellers operate alone, most of them women running one-person businesses from home, per the company’s annual report. They’re the constituency whose complaints produced the rule, and the constituency now carrying its compliance burden.
The move lands inside a broader platform correction. Snap has banned wholly AI-generated content from its recommendation algorithm. Spotify has pulled 50 million AI-generated tracks. YouTube Music began labeling songs made primarily with generative AI on Oct. 14. The EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations took effect Aug. 2, carrying fines of up to €15 million or 3 percent of worldwide annual turnover.
What Etsy is really announcing is that provenance has become the product. The listing photograph, once a courtesy, is now the authentication layer separating a working seller from a prompt.
