Google is wiring its consumer AI assistant directly into the two surfaces that most determine whether a small business gets found: Google Ads and Google Business Profile. On Monday, the company announced a dedicated small-business landing page inside the Gemini app, pairing a one-time brand-kit upload with connectors to Shopify, Canva, Adobe, Wix, Zoho, Dropbox and Xero. Vishnu Sivaji, senior director for the Gemini app, said in a post on the company’s Keyword blog that the business hub, new marketing and finance skills, and connected apps will begin rolling out globally to all Gemini users in the coming days.
The framing matters. AdGully described the update as pushing Gemini “from a content generation assistant into an operational hub,” and that’s the structural shift. A solo operator uploads brand guidelines once, generates on-brand visuals with Nano Banana 2.1, and reviews paid-search and Maps performance without leaving the chat window. Google says tens of millions of small-business owners already use Gemini to brainstorm products, manage customer feedback and analyze performance; this release tries to convert that habit into managed distribution.
The example Google chose to lead with is instructive. Josh, owner of Burger & Butcher in New Jersey, connects his Google Business Profile and checks local search and Maps performance between shifts, then adjusts the menu accordingly. That’s the real pitch to founder-led businesses: the account you’ve been ignoring becomes legible without hiring a media buyer.
Context sharpens the move. Google’s AI now rewrites the first line of brand descriptions for most searchers, as covered here. Microsoft recently began handing businesses a list of the AI queries they’re losing to rivals. And third-party audits keep showing that AI answers fail to surface most businesses at all. Owners are being told the discovery layer has moved; Gemini is the first consumer assistant offering to operate it for them.
What Google didn’t say is also informative. Per Blockchain.News, the company disclosed no pricing, no usage caps, and no rollout schedule beyond “coming days.” Larger organizations get pointed to Gemini for Business, a separate tier with centralized administrative controls, data governance and enterprise-grade security. The small-business hub is the funnel; the enterprise tier is the margin.
It’s a classic platform move. Give the operator a hub, and the hub becomes the operator.
