OpenAI said Saturday that ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, and is opening self-serve buying through its Ads Manager to advertisers in India, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. Tens of thousands of businesses are already running placements against the free tier’s more than one billion weekly users.
The geographic expansion matters more than the headline number. Ads Manager, introduced in May, was the moment ChatGPT Ads became a channel small operators could actually touch without a sales call. Opening it to three major regions converts a US-centric experiment into something closer to a global auction, which is how ad businesses compound.
The $1 billion figure also sits inside a larger ambition. Digiday reports OpenAI has told investors it’s targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year.
Third-party measurement data, released alongside the announcement, is doing the real persuasion work. DV Rockerbox clocked WeightWatchers at a cost per acquisition 15.3 percent below its blended paid-search benchmark. Triple Whale found that 93 percent of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new. WorkMagic attributed 67 percent of incremental purchases for the wellness brand Dose to net-new customers. OpenAI itself cited an unnamed e-commerce advertiser at 3x return on ad spend over 28 days and an unnamed technology partner where more than 80 percent of ad-driven traffic came from new customers.
The attribution plumbing is now unusually complete for a channel this young. Conversion data flows through Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp; click attribution runs through AppsFlyer, Adjust, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. That roster is what makes the “early mover” math legible to performance buyers who demand measurement before scale.
Format expansion is moving in parallel. TechCrunch reported on October 5 that OpenAI will begin testing a visual ad unit alongside image generation results later this month, confined initially to the US and a small group of advertisers, with labels separating the ad from the generated image. That extends the two-way conversational ad formats OpenAI introduced in September and arrives on top of the rollout of GPT-6 and the Intelligent UI to all 1.2 billion weekly users.
Speaking at Advertising Week New York on October 8, Samantha Jacobson, OpenAI’s vice president of monetization partnerships, offered the philosophical frame. “knowing who the person is, I think matters less” than what a user is trying to do in the moment, she said. It’s a quiet repudiation of two decades of identity-based targeting, delivered at the industry conference built to defend it.
