OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT on Wednesday, a paid-placement format that swaps the familiar ad-click-to-landing-page motion for a labeled, walled-off conversation with an advertiser’s own agent. The test, announced in a Sept. 16 blog post titled “Reimagining Advertising with AI,” shipped alongside a natural-language Ads Manager plugin, an AI creative tool that drafts copy and imagery from a landing page and objective, and inaugural integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. Taken together, it’s the moment ChatGPT stops being an organic discovery surface for small operators and starts behaving like a measurable paid channel.
The mechanics are worth reading carefully. A shopper sees a sponsored placement (OpenAI’s example is a dining table), taps in, and lands in a conversation with the merchant’s agent that’s deliberately partitioned from ChatGPT’s neutral answers and the user’s original chat. “Sponsored Agents give users the option to go deeper,” OpenAI wrote. Per Reuters, the agents will be clearly labeled, and the Shopify ChatGPT Ads app will expand internationally in ChatGPT Ads markets beginning Sept. 23.
For a five-to-thirty-person business, the interesting object here isn’t the format. It’s the plumbing.
Search Engine Land reports that advertisers can use plain-language prompts inside ChatGPT Work to build, update, and analyze campaigns, with optional text customization that adapts headlines to live conversation context and translates copy into the user’s language. HubSpot, named as inaugural CRM partner, lets accounts connect ChatGPT Ads to build campaigns, track performance, and follow leads inside the CRM; Quartz reports HubSpot is dangling an AI Growth Bundle with up to 65% off Starter for a year and a $750 match on ChatGPT Ads spend for new accounts opened by Sept. 30. Shopify, first e-commerce partner, delivers catalog sync and purchase tracking through the ChatGPT Ads app. Attribution, in other words, is no longer the missing piece.
The commercial backdrop matters. PYMNTS reports the ChatGPT Ads business hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate by Aug. 31. OpenAI opened the surface to Amazon’s advertiser base last week, and HubSpot has been pushing agent tooling toward smaller customers since Unbound opened. The A.I. Canonical has tracked in referral data that AI-sourced traffic already converts better than any other channel on revenue.
That’s the structural read. The organic advantage smaller operators enjoyed inside ChatGPT for the last year is now getting a price tag attached to it, and the pricing infrastructure was built before most of them noticed the channel existed.
