Google will begin billing Local Services Ads advertisers for missed calls starting October 1, 2026, according to an email sent to LSA customers this week and posted by Search Engine Roundtable. “On October 01, 2026, we are updating how and when you are charged for call leads originating from Local Services Ads,” the company wrote. Under the new rule, unanswered calls received during business hours “will now be charged as valid leads if a user stays on the line for more than 20 seconds,” and “any follow-up calls between your business and the user that meet the valid lead criteria will be charged.”
For the plumbers, locksmiths, roofers, and personal-injury lawyers who account for most LSA spend, this is a quiet inversion of the channel’s economics. A missed call used to be a lost opportunity. Now it’s a line item.
Google’s current help documentation still defines a valid missed-call lead as one where the advertiser “return[s] the customer’s message with a text message, email, or call.” The October policy retires that requirement. What the platform is buying with the change is legible: responsiveness, priced. “helps ensure our platform continues to meet these customer expectations while rewarding businesses that provide excellent responsiveness,” the email reads.
There are two carve-outs. Businesses with keypress menus get a small reprieve: “the 20 second-timer will start once customers press the key,” and callers who hang up before pressing anything don’t generate a charge. Google also referenced unspecified safeguards against spam and robot calls. Calls outside posted business hours aren’t billable.
The timing sits alongside two other LSA shifts reported by Search Engine Land this week. Reserve with Google booking partners inside LSA expanded from roughly 20 to more than 500, with direct bookings flowing into lead reporting as paid leads. And Google broadened LSA eligibility categories ahead of a phased migration of LSA management into Google Ads, starting with select U.S. home and storefront advertisers in August 2026 and reaching the remaining categories in 2027.
Read together, the three moves point in one direction. LSA is being absorbed into the larger Google Ads surface, its billing surface widened, its definition of a lead loosened. For advertisers paying by the call, the operational answer arrives on a fixed date. Every phone tree, voicemail chain, and after-hours forwarding rule has about five weeks to be tested against a twenty-second clock.
