Alphabet on Wednesday moved Demis Hassabis out of the chief executive role at Google DeepMind and confirmed the departure of Jeff Dean, its chief scientist of 27 years, in the deepest reshuffle of the company’s AI leadership since the 2023 Google Brain merger created the unit. Hassabis becomes chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s chief technology officer, is elevated to senior vice president and will oversee the next flagship model, Gemini 4. Shares fell about 4 percent on the day, closer to 5 percent by Fortune’s accounting.

The scaffolding of the announcement reads like promotion. The subtext is that Alphabet no longer has a standalone chief executive for its most important research unit, which Bloomberg noted is the first time that’s been true since the merger.

Dean isn’t going quietly. He is leaving with Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Senior Fellow, DeepMind vice president Oriol Vinyals, and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le to start Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation in which Alphabet, per Bloomberg, will be a founding investor and cloud partner. Dean told The New York Times that operating outside a public company would let the team make decisions that “aren’t necessarily in the company’s purest financial interests.” It’s a striking sentence from someone who spent 27 years inside one of the most successful public companies in history, and it lands in a specific context: Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer already left for OpenAI, Nobel laureate John Jumper for Anthropic. The frontier researchers are voting with their calendars.

The financial frame sharpens the picture. Alphabet’s July 22 earnings showed $120 billion in revenue growing 24 percent, but capital expenditures on AI infrastructure pushed free cash flow negative for the first time since the 2004 IPO. The next flagship model is months behind its original June target. Semafor reports Google’s models remain roughly six months behind the frontier on coding, and that Hassabis had been stepping back from operational duties for nearly a year, meaning Wednesday’s memo formalized a transition already well underway.

“I’ve decided that now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM,” Hassabis told employees, freeing him for Alphabet-wide science and the DeepMind drug-discovery spinout Isomorphic Labs. Sundar Pichai’s memo, cited by Reuters, called the work “vitally important to Alphabet and humanity.”

The order of those two nouns is the entire question Discovery Loop was founded to answer.
