TikTok used Advertising Week New York on Oct. 5, 2026 to announce the feature it has quietly needed for years: Buy Direct, a one-click in-app checkout that lets a shopper complete a purchase from a brand’s video without being redirected off the platform. Alongside it came a conversational Shopping Assistant, an A.I. lead-generation agent called Agentic Leads, and the U.S. opening of the TikTok Ad Network. Taken together, the For You feed stops being a discovery surface that hands off to someone else’s checkout. It becomes the checkout.
The strategic logic is unsubtle. Every redirect to an external site has been a conversion leak, and the leak has been getting worse as shoppers detour through ChatGPT or Google mid-purchase to ask the questions brands’ product pages don’t answer. The Shopping Assistant, per TechCrunch, is explicitly designed to keep those questions, on sizing, shipping, availability, inside the app. Agentic Leads carries the same intent-capture logic into direct messages and advertiser-owned sites.
TikTok says the commerce stack is being built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. It hasn’t disclosed Buy Direct’s merchant fees or a general-availability date, which are the two numbers that’ll decide whether small brands actually adopt it before the holidays.
The second announcement is arguably the bigger one. TTAN, which launched internationally in 2019 as Pangle, now opens to U.S. advertisers. The Drum puts its daily active user base at roughly one billion. MediaPost reports the network spans nearly 400,000 third-party apps across more than 40 gaming and non-gaming genres, with DoubleVerify and IAS supplying brand-safety controls. For a small consumer brand already producing TikTok creative, that’s incremental Q4 reach at near-zero additional asset cost.
The sizing of the opportunity comes from TikTok itself, citing a commissioned PF Global report that credits platform activity with $81 billion in U.S. GDP in 2025 and claims 54 million Americans have bought a product after watching a TikTok video. Vendor-commissioned numbers deserve the usual skepticism. The direction they point in doesn’t.
This arrives inside a wider realignment of where purchases happen. Google opened its A.I. shopping checkout hub to all U.S. merchants a day later, and Meta and Sierra proposed an open standard for how A.I. agents shop, book and buy two days after that. Three platforms, one week, same move: pull the transaction inside the feed before the agent layer decides where transactions happen by default.
