OpenAI announced on Oct. 5 that it’ll begin testing a visual advertising format inside ChatGPT’s image generator later this month, placing labeled display units alongside AI-generated pictures for Free and Go plan users in the United States. The company says the ads will showcase “product inspiration, product usage, or the experiences they make possible” and “remain separate from the image being created.”
The move extends a build-out that began seven months ago, when ChatGPT started selling ads at all, and arrives roughly a month after the platform’s shift toward conversational ad placements. Image generation is where ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users most clearly signal commercial intent, and OpenAI is finally monetizing that signal in a format advertisers already understand.
The more revealing announcement is the measurement stack. OpenAI added ten click-attribution partners, including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL will handle full-funnel measurement; Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic are running geo-based incrementality tests. Data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp let advertisers pipe conversion data from existing systems. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are piloting brand-suitability review of the ad environment without access to private conversations.
That’s a response to a specific problem. Agency reports over the past several months have described inconsistent attribution, discrepancies between platform and independent click counts, and delayed reporting, all of which kept budgets at experimental levels. Partner integrations don’t solve attribution. They distribute the question of whom to believe across enough vendors that the discrepancies become legible.
The commercial case rests on a gap Kantar’s Media Reactions 2026 study made explicit: 75 percent of marketers plan to increase investment in AI assistants in 2027, while just 23 percent of consumers trust AI assistant recommendations. Advertiser enthusiasm is running decisively ahead of user trust, and the visual format is partly an attempt to close that gap by borrowing the grammar of display advertising, where separation between editorial and sponsored content is already understood.
For small businesses in lifestyle, food, home, fashion, and local services, the US test is the moment inventory is most negotiable. Early windows on platforms this large tend not to stay open. Once inventory on platforms of this scale matures, acquisition costs rarely remain experimental for long.
